National Seminar 2019 Applications Now Open

Hello Coaches and Registered OSDU Member Schools,

OSDU is now opening applications for students wishing to attend the 2019 National Seminar, which will be held this year from Wednesday September 25 to Monday September 30th, 2019 in Morden, Manitoba. Please note the Wednesday and Monday are travel days.

For those who are not familiar with it, the National Seminar is a non-competitive debate seminar which includes a debate tournament, model parliament event, cultural experiences in the host City, and debate workshops. This is an event tailored to newer debaters, or those wishing to hone their skills – it is not an event recommended for advanced or highly competitive debaters. The registration fee for the tournament has not yet been released, however for reference, in previous years the fee has been approximately $650, which includes 5 nights in a hotel, and food/transportation costs.

If a student wishes to attend, they must follow the process outlined below – please note this is an individual event, and your application does not guarantee you a spot in the event, the OSDU Board will be selecting its delegation based on strict criteria established by the host event:

  1. Fill out the attached application, and send it to osdupresident@gmail.com by 9:00 pm on April 20th, 2019. Please select in which language category you are most interested in attending.
  2. The selection committee will review all applications, and will select a limited number of students divided amongst the english, french, and bilingual categories. We will inform you of our decisions by April 28th, 2019.

Students interested in applying must be in Grades 9-12 as of September, 2019, and may not have attended a National Championship event, or the National Seminar in previous years.

Please note that at this time, only one student per school will be selected. Chaperoning of Ontario Delegates at the event has not yet been decided. The OSDU board MAY decide to send 1-2 chaperones for the attending delegates, and is investigating the feasibility of this, however this has not been determined. As in past years, you may be asked to bring a chaperone. We will be confirming this prior to the registration deadline.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know. Additional information about the event can be found on the Canadian Student Debating Federation Website.

Regards, and best of luck in your applications!

OSDU’s application process for Team Canada Tryouts

The Ontario Student Debating Union is happy to release this year’s application for the Canadian National Debate Team, or “Team Canada”. The purpose of this application is for OSDU to select the three students who will represent Ontario at the National Team Tryout, where the selection of Team Canada will take place. The National tryout will take place from April 15-17, 2019 in Halifax, Nova Scotia (the days following the Senior National Debate Championships). In order to attend this qualifier, interested students must complete and submit the attached application by email to osdupresident@gmail.com no later than 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12th. Students must also still be registered in high school in September 2019; meaning students currently in Grade 12 who intend to graduate high school this spring are not eligible.

A qualified panel will review all written applications, and select three students from among all applicants to attend the qualifier on Ontario’s behalf – students will be notified by February 19th of their success in this process. Students who apply but are not successful have the opportunity to submit an alternate application at a later date; further information will be provided to applicable students.

For those schools who may not be familiar with what Team Canada is, this is a select team of students from across Canada, who are selected annually by the National Team coach and committee. This team is highly competitive, and will represent Canada at the Worlds Schools Debating Championships, and other international tournaments throughout the year. This requires a large commitment of time from students on the team who must work hard, and complete debate-related assignments regularly in order to prepare for tournaments. This is an extraordinary opportunity for competitive debaters looking for a new challenge, and should you have any additional questions please feel free to let me know.

To apply please complete the following application.
